Art of Stone Featured at College of Charleston Masterclass on Natural Stone Craftsmanship

On October 29, 2025, Ivan Andreev of Art of Stone was invited to serve as a featured guest lecturer at the College of Charleston’s Department of Art and Architectural History.

The masterclass was delivered for students enrolled in the course Materials & Techniques of Islamic Art, led by Dr. Jessica Renee Streit, Associate Professor of Art and Architectural History.

Approximately 20–25 students attended the live demonstration and lecture.

Bridging Academic Study and Professional Stone Craftsmanship

The lecture, titled:

“Applied Natural Stone Craftsmanship: Professional Tools, Material Knowledge, and Live Demonstration”

focused on the practical dimensions of architectural stonework.

While students regularly study architecture and material culture in theory, this session emphasized hands-on understanding — how natural stone is actually shaped, refined, and restored in professional practice.

Dr. Streit noted in her letter that Mr. Andreev’s participation reflected his “technical mastery” and the level of expertise required to meaningfully advance students’ understanding of craftsmanship in stone.

Understanding Stone Beyond the Surface

During the masterclass, students explored:

• Physical characteristics of limestone, marble, granite, and slate

• Structural performance and long-term durability

• Tool selection and application methods

• Traditional hand tools and modern precision equipment

• Safety protocols and professional workflow

The demonstration included live tool use, giving students the opportunity to observe how professional decisions are made in real time depending on the material and intended aesthetic outcome.

Why Craftsmanship Matters in Architectural Education

As highlighted by Dr. Streit in her official statement, architectural history is not only visual or theoretical — it is deeply connected to material knowledge and technical execution.

She wrote that practitioners with genuine mastery are uniquely positioned to convey the essential dimensions of material and technique.

The hands-on component transformed abstract classroom concepts into concrete understanding.

Post-lecture feedback confirmed that the demonstration significantly elevated students’ comprehension of the technical realities of working with natural stone.

Community Engagement and Professional Responsibility

At Art of Stone, we believe craftsmanship is not only a trade — it is a discipline rooted in knowledge, precision, and historical continuity.

Engaging with local academic institutions allows us to contribute to Charleston’s broader cultural and architectural conversation.

Founded in 1770, the College of Charleston is one of the oldest institutions of higher education in the United States, and its Department of Art and Architectural History emphasizes the relationship between aesthetic vision and technical execution — a philosophy deeply aligned with professional stone restoration.
