Art of Stone at Career Day in Charleston, SC: Introducing Students to Stone Restoration

On March 12, 2026, Art of Stone participated in Career Day at Camp Road Middle School in Charleston, South Carolina.

The event brought together approximately 900 students from grades 6–8, who attended in rotating groups throughout the day. Each session included around 150 students, creating a dynamic and engaging environment inside the school gym.

Career Day was organized as an interactive career fair, where students had the opportunity to explore different professions, ask questions, and complete activities designed to help them better understand potential career paths.

Art of Stone was invited to represent the construction and skilled trades sector, with a focus on natural stone restoration and maintenance.

A Hands-On Approach Instead of a Traditional Presentation

Rather than delivering a standard lecture, the Art of Stone team created an interactive booth designed to engage students through hands-on experience.

The goal was simple:

To make a complex and highly specialized craft — working with natural stone — accessible, visual, and easy to understand.

The team included:

• Olga Andreeva — Owner of Art of Stone

• Ivan Andreev — Stone specialist and technical expert

Together, they introduced students to the real-world applications of stone craftsmanship through live demonstrations and material samples.

Materials Students Could See and Touch

At the booth, students were able to interact directly with a variety of natural and engineered materials, including:

• Marble

• Granite

• Quartzite

• Quartz (engineered stone)

Students were encouraged to:

• Touch the materials

• Compare textures

• Observe visual differences

• Ask questions about how each material behaves

This tactile experience helped students better understand how different types of stone are used in homes and why they require different care and restoration techniques.

Demonstration 1: Scratch Test (Understanding Stone Hardness)

One of the most engaging parts of the presentation was the scratch test demonstration.

Students were invited to use a coin to try scratching different types of stone.

This simple but effective experiment helped demonstrate:

• The difference in hardness between materials

• Why marble is more prone to scratching and etching

• Why granite and quartzite are more resistant

Instead of just hearing about material properties, students could see and feel the difference themselves — making the concept much more memorable.

Demonstration 2: Sealer Test (How Stone Protection Works)

Another key demonstration focused on how natural stone is protected.

Half of each stone sample had been treated with a professional sealer, while the other half was left untreated.

During the demonstration, common household liquids such as water, coffee, and oil were applied to the surface.

Students observed:

• How liquids quickly absorbed into untreated stone

• How sealed surfaces resisted moisture

• How staining can occur without proper protection

This demonstration introduced students to the concept of stone porosity and explained why sealing is essential for surfaces like:

• Kitchen countertops

• Bathroom vanities

• Shower areas

Student Interaction and Questions

Throughout the event, students actively engaged with the Art of Stone team.

Many asked insightful questions such as:

• What does your company do?

• Where is natural stone used?

• Do you need a college degree for this career?

• What skills are important?

• Is this work difficult?

Students also participated in Career Day activities, including:

• Completing worksheets about different professions

• Collecting signatures from participants

• Filling out Career Day Bingo cards

Why Skilled Trades Matter

Events like Career Day are important because they introduce students to career paths that are often overlooked.

Stone restoration is a specialized field that combines:

• Technical knowledge

• Manual skill

• Attention to detail

• Problem-solving

By demonstrating real tools, materials, and techniques, Art of Stone aimed to show that skilled trades are not only valuable but also highly professional and rewarding careers.

A Meaningful Experience for Both Students and Professionals

The interactive format of the Art of Stone booth allowed students to connect with the material in a practical and engaging way.

Instead of abstract explanations, they experienced:

• How stone behaves

• How it can be damaged

• How it can be protected and restored

For the Art of Stone team, the event was an opportunity to share their expertise, inspire curiosity, and contribute to the local community.
